Visitors to Swiss Cottage library can now access wireless internet via their laptop computers. WiFi has been introduced to the library and many parts of the Swiss Cottage site, including the leisure centre, as part of a pilot for the borough. Customers will need to get a daily password from the main library reception to access the internet and access is subject to the same filters as the library computers so inappropriate content cannot be accessed.
Lincoln is to go wireless as the company providing the centre's WiFi network is extending it to cover the whole city, it was announced today. Local internet service provider (ISP) AB Internet initially set up city centre WiFi back in February of this year, but now plans to roll it out further, allowing both businesses and residents to access it for a small daily charge. Historically wireless has been limited to the coffee shop off the high street, but we want to bring the benefits of wireless to everyone. As well as businesses and residents, city authorities such as the police will be able to take advantage of this extension, as well as the staff and students at Lincoln University.
Godalming blazed the way in May 2008 by becoming one of the first towns in the country to provide free wireless internet access and the town has just celebrated the first anniversary of WiFi by gaining a prestigious regional award. Godalming has won the best business and economy project in the South East as part of an award scheme run by Action for Market Towns. The scheme celebrates innovation, good practice and ideas that can be replicated in other market towns. During the last year, residents and visitors have been able to access the internet at no cost using laptops, mobile phones and gaming devices across Godalming from the railway station to High Street and to Waverley Borough Council’s offices at The Burys. The free wireless network was set up with financial assistance from the Surrey Economic Partnership, the European-funded eParticipate project and Waverley council, with sponsorship provided by technology partner Nouveau Solutions Ltd.
